We all know this struggle, am I right? You find the most adorable dress, top, or sweater for your child. They wear it once or twice. Then a week later — bam; they’ve completely outgrown it. I’ve partnered with Osh Kosh B’gosh to share a few tips that I’ve learned after two years of being a mommy. These tips will help make kids clothing last longer so that you don’t feel bad about spending money on kids fashion items that are left unworn.
TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE KIDS CLOTHES LAST LONGER
1. Buy 1-2 sizes too big to make kids clothes last longer.
This is probably a given if you have children, but buying their clothing 1-2 sizes bigger helps tremendously when you need to use it for longer than two weeks. This tip ensures that your children’s clothing lasts through a season or two. I also tend to buy pieces that “grow” with Grace. So, overalls, and jumpers that are adjustable are SO nice because as your child gets taller but not necessarily wider. You can adjust the shoulder straps to fit. She had the same pair of overalls throughout the first 6-12 months of her life, and now we have this adorable Osh Kosh B’gosh overall skirt for Spring and Summer!
2. Don’t spend a ton of money.
This is also probably a given, but if you’re a new parent and were anything like I was, you bought TONS of newborn and 0-3 month outfits that got worn maybe one time, if that! The key to not spending tons of money is shop at stores that sell affordable, yet fashionable kid styles. I really like Osh Kosh B’gosh because they typically have sales or coupon codes.
3. Only wash if something is majorly soiled.
I do this for my own clothes, so why wouldn’t I do this for Grace? Now, it’s one thing if she’s worn the same outfit for 8-10 hours of the day. But typically we get dressed for 1-2 hour outings and then come home and change back into our comfy clothes. If Grace doesn’t eat in her clothing or play at the park, etc, then I typically will hang that item back up and will wait to wash it until the next round of laundry. Like I said, you have to use wisdom with this tip, but over washing clothing is one of the main reasons it doesn’t last as long.
4. Use a gentle detergent for washing.
This is a big one that is often overlooked. If a clothing item is super soiled, it definitely needs a good wash. There are tons of gentle stain removers and gentle laundry detergents out there. Be sure to find something without harsh chemicals that will break down the clothing, wash after wash. Definitely email me if you need some detergent recommendations! I’m currently in the middle of testing out a few new ones and I am happy to share the knowledge.
